Steamship · 1903–1913 · Dumfries and Galloway, United Kingdom
The Cragsman, a small steamship built in 1903, was owned by John Kennedy and Sons Ltd and registered in Glasgow. On a voyage from Glasgow to Liverpool in November 1913, she faced a dire situation. After springing a leak off Portpatrick, the crew was unable to manage the incoming water, leading to the extinguishing of her boiler fire.
As she drifted uncontrollably in stormy conditions, the eight crew members abandoned ship and successfully rowed to safety at West Tarbet Bay. The Cragsman, left partially submerged near Crammag Head, was battered by westerly gales and declared a total loss. Today, her remains are scattered across a rocky slope in the Solway Firth.
Notable features include her boilers and remnants of her granite cargo, which lie among the wreckage in a scattered condition.
