Marjorie Seed

Members of Irvine Sub-Aqua Club settled a long confusion over the Marjorie Seed in 1987, when they found a maker's plate on the nearby Ahdeek, which had been taken for her, and a bell inscribed Westhampton on her own remains. Westhampton was the name she was launched under at Sunderland; she later sailed as Elli, Amphion and Baron Cathcart before the Seed Shipping Company of Newcastle bought her.

Bound from Rothesay Dock for Huelva with coal and coke, she struck Lady Isle at its north eastern point in clear, calm weather, and no adequate explanation of the error was ever given. Hopes of refloating her ended after a week of south westerly gales, and a later inspection found her port side holed, keel buckled and stern post broken.

Salvors stripped her over the following years, and her broken plates and girders now lie scattered over rock and shingle.

History and LossLost 1924 · Firth of Clyde, United Kingdom.

Her final voyage began at Clydebank on 26th December 1924, and the weather was still fair when she cleared the Cumbraes. Within hours she was hard aground at Lady Isle. Troon heard her radio calls for help at about 6pm; a lifeboat and a tug came alongside and rescued most of the twenty-four men aboard, while four stayed behind to assess her and later reported the engine room flooded to a depth of four feet.
