Craigantlet

The crew of the Craigantlet were lifted off by a Royal Navy Sea King from HMS Gannet at Prestwick after she drove ashore beneath Killantringan Lighthouse in a storm before dawn in February 1982, while the Portpatrick lifeboat and cliff rescue teams stood ready and the coastguard at Ramsey, on the Isle of Man, directed the operation.

Built in Finland by Reposaaren Konepaja in 1972 and owned in her last years by Skymar Navigation of Limassol, she had sailed from Belfast for Liverpool the evening before. Part of her cargo was hazardous chemical waste, and police closed off the shore around Portmaggie. Her back broke soon after she grounded, and further storms and the salvage work later split her in two.

Years of North Channel seas have since worn her down to wreckage scattered across the bay, now almost entirely below the surface.
